Materials · Asphalt shingles

The most common roof in Texas, installed like it matters.

Asphalt shingles are affordable, repairable and available in hundreds of colors. How long they last depends mostly on what you can’t see: nailing, ventilation and underlayment.

Why installation matters more than brand

Every major manufacturer makes a good architectural shingle. Most early failures we see trace back to installation: nails placed outside the nailing strip, a missing starter course, or an attic so hot the shingles bake from underneath.

We install shingles as a matched system with starter, underlayment, leak barrier, hip and ridge from the same product line where available. That’s often what manufacturers require for their extended warranty tiers.

Service life depends on ventilation, sun exposure and storms more than on the label. In Texas heat, plan conservatively.

Details

The parts that make a shingle roof last

  • Nailing

Four to six nails per shingle in the manufacturer’s nailing zone, set flush, not overdriven. This is the main thing standing between your roof and a 60 mph gust.

  • Starter course

A sealed starter strip at eaves and rakes keeps wind from getting under the first row.

  • Ventilation

Balanced intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge keeps the attic closer to outdoor temperature, so shingles don’t cook from below.

  • Leak barrier

Self-adhering membrane in valleys and around chimneys, skylights and pipes, where water concentrates.

How we work

What you can hold us to

Not slogans — the specific things that happen on every job.

  1. Photo-documented inspections

Every inspection ends with a photo report of what we saw on each slope — including what is fine. You keep it whether or not you hire us.

  2. Written, line-item scope

Estimates list materials, quantities, and labor by line. If decking turns out to be rotten, the per-sheet price is already in writing before work starts.

  3. No deductible games

Texas law makes it illegal for a contractor to waive, absorb or rebate an insurance deductible. We don’t, and we put that in the contract.

  4. One project lead, start to finish

The person who scopes your roof is the person you call during the job. Daily updates on tear-off and install days.

Questions

Asphalt Shingle Roofing: common questions

More answers on the full FAQ page.

How long do asphalt shingles last in Texas?

It varies widely with product, color, ventilation and storm exposure. Intense sun and attic heat shorten life compared with milder climates. We’ll give you an honest range for your roof, not the number printed on the bundle.

Are darker shingles a bad idea?

Darker colors absorb more heat. With good attic ventilation the difference to shingle life is modest, but if you’re choosing between two you like, a lighter color helps a little with attic temperature.

Do Class 4 shingles stop all hail damage?

No. They resist impact better, but very large hail can still damage any roof. They reduce the odds and the severity, and many insurers recognize that.
